Spirit of America Boating Program

June 17, 2017 @ 12:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Over the past 20 years, the Spirit of America Foundation has provided America’s premier youth boating education programs to tens of thousands of young people in 22 locations around the country. Since 2014, they have partnered with the YMCA to offer the program here in Ashtabula County. Students will begin by earning their Ohio Boater Education Certificate, which never expires and is required for anyone born on or after January 1, 1982 in order to operate any boat or personal watercraft over 10 horsepower in the state of Ohio. Then they will move on to learning, hands-on, how to safely and properly operate all kinds of watercraft including canoes and kayaks, powerboats, sailboats and jet skis. At the end of the program, students will spend a day on a large vessel with the Coast Guard.

This program is for all children ages 12 to 15. The cost is only $45 for YMCA members, or $50 for non-members, and financial assistance is available. Registration is due by May 24. Class will be held on Saturday, May 27 from 9am to 5pm, Wednesday, May 31 from 5 to 9pm, and Saturdays, June 3-24 from 9am to 3pm (12-3pm June 17). For more information, contact Brian Pruitt at (440) 997-5321 or at bpruitt@ashtabulaymca.org. This program is partially funded by a grant from ODNR Division of Watercraft.
